The Wolf in Central Europe: Status, threats and management

Background

The Central European lowlands population of the wolf(CEP) with its main area of distribution in Germany andwestern Poland continues to spread and has alreadyreached the northern and western neighbouring countriesof Germany. Moreover, it can be expected that the demographicexchange between the CEP and neighbouringpopulations (Baltic -, Carpathian - and Alpine population)will increase and may become established in the future. As suggested by the Large Carnivore Initiative Europe(LCIE) a population based management across administrativeborders is required to successfully implement the HabitatsDirective for the wolf (and other large carnivores). For this purpose, we are inviting experts of nature conservationauthorities, universities and scientific institutionsfrom Germany and various European countries to discussthe needs and possibilities for a transboundary collaborationin the management of Central European wolves.
