Katharina Rogalla von Bieberstein is a German lawyer with a Master in Laws in Environmental Law from McGill University, Montréal, Canada. Having spent most of her professional career outside of Germany, she is today based in Copenhagen, Denmark, and works as a freelance consultant on international development topics with a focus on environmental law and policy.
Katharina has over fifteen years of international experience and has amongst others worked at the Centre for International Sustainable Development Law (CISDL), the UN Environment Programme- World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC), the International Centre for Antimicrobial Resistance Solutions (ICARS) and as international consultant on behalf of the German development cooperation GIZ, ClientEarth, and others.
From 2012 until 2020, Katharina supported several CBD and IPBES related projects. This included for example support to (1) the UNEP Environmental Treaties Programme to strengthen cooperation among biodiversity-related agreements, (2) the EU’s reporting to the CBD (for two reporting cycles), (3) the lead up to the Kunming-Montréal Global Biodiversity Framework, and (4) support to the WABES initiative, which aims to facilitate capacity-building across West Africa in support of the IPBES Work Programme. Further, in her role as the Environmental Legal Specialist at UNEP-WCMC, Katharina provided legal expertise to projects across the organisation, working amongst other topics on environmental impact assessments, ocean governance, and international trade.
Following Katharina’s move to Denmark in 2020, she worked for three years at ICARS and played an instrumental role in its transformation into an international organisation. She contributed to the establishment of an efficient and transparent governance structure and effective administrative and legally compliant procedures, thereby launching ICARS project work in low- and middle-income countries across the globe. Katharina further provided legal and police advice across the organisation and managed ICARS projects to advance community engagement to address antimicrobial resistance.
Katharina has been an ibn member since 2021.
