Science-based, implementation focused and SMART targets for the post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework

The aim of the project is to contribute to the current discussion on the CBD post-2020 global biodiversity framework through target proposals that are based on IPBES recommendations and recognize IPBES terms and findings, especially of the IPBES Global Assessment on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (2019). The proposals will also consider lessons learned from the past Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 and the Aichi Targets and apply the SMART criteria, as many CBD parties requested for the development of post-2020 goals and targets.
The project team, in close collaboration with the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, selects target topics, and through application of the approach presented in the paper “Recommendations for Elements of the post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework based on the IPBES GlobalAssessment Report- Analysis of possible actions for transformative change“ by Timpte, Mitlacher and Paulsch in August 2019 and the case study on economic incentives by Mitlacher and Timpte, proposals for the formulation of selected targets will be developed.
The results of the study will be fed into the discussion process on the CBD post 2020 targets.
