Germany as a Party to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and member state of the EU is committed to the conservation of biological diversity. Important instruments to implement the CBD in Germany are NATURA 2000 (a network of protected areas throughout Europe, based on the Birds Directive and Flora-Fauna-Habitat Directive) and the German National Biodiversity Strategy (NBS). The re-installment of wilderness is a target mentioned several times in the NBS. Until 2020 in at least 2% of German territory nature should be allowed to develop undisturbed again. To implement this target of the establishment of wilderness areas and to support that process from a scientific perspective a series of three workshops was performed under the overarching title 'Wilderness in Dialogue'. The workshops were facilitated in 2014-2016 and invited participants from respective administration levels, universities, conservation NGOs and foundations. Based on key note presentations about 35 participants per workshop discussed aspects of implementation. The ideas and concepts developed in these workshops were made publicly available.
