Due to the EU enlargement in May 2004 the European Commission Directorate-General Environment decided to assist the Non Governmental Organisations of the Candidate Countries and the Balkan NGOs in EU environmental policy and bring NGOs together with EU Commission in an open and constructive dialogue. The Institute for Biodiversity coordinated the final meeting on 18-19 April, 2004, in Brussels. 28 representatives from 13 countries took part in that meeting. Furthermore, 6 Observer NGOs and 8 members of DG Environment joint the meeting. The EU Commissioner for the Environment, Margot Wallström, answered questions of the participants. The report of this dialogue meeting was printed in 800 copies and widely distributed.
